What temperature conditions do tomatoes need to grow?

Greenhouse

Tomatoes are warm vegetables, generally speaking, the temperature range of 15-35℃ can be adapted to tomato growth. The optimum temperature for assimilation is 20-30℃, the growth is affected when the temperature is as high as 33℃, the growth stops when it reaches 40℃, and the high temperature hazard occurs when it reaches 45℃. The temperature drops below 10 ° C to slow growth, and stops growing at 5 ° C. Minus 1-2℃ tomatoes will freeze to death, the optimal temperature for tomato growth is 20-23℃, when the local temperature drops to 6℃, the root system stops growing. Greenhouses can be equipped with different equipment to regulate the air temperature and humidity to provide a suitable growing environment for tomatoes.

The temperature requirements of tomato in different stages of development are different:

  • Tomato is sensitive to temperature at seedling stage and flowering stage, and the optimum temperature is 20-30℃ during the day and 15-20℃ at night. When low temperature or high temperature above 30℃ is encountered in flowering period, pollen grain germination and pollen tube elongation are poor, fertilization is poor, and flower and fruit fall is easy to occur. In order to avoid this situation, the greenhouse is equipped with a cooling system to regulate the temperature, so as to facilitate the good growth of tomatoes.

  • The optimum temperature in the bearing period was 24-26℃ during the day and 12-17℃ at night.

  • The optimum temperature of fruit coloring stage was 20-25℃, and the color was poor above 30℃.

Tomato growth and development need a certain temperature difference between day and night, especially in the fruiting period. Tomato plants produce nutrients by photosynthesis during the day, and properly reduce the temperature at night, which is conducive to the transport and accumulation of nutrients, promote the growth of roots, stems, leaves and fruits, thus improving the yield and quality. So greenhouses play a very important role in growing tomatoes.
